Today’s Encouragement

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

There are things we have to face in life that may make us uncomfortable. Sometimes these challenges create anxiety or are even scary. Yet the Lord tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 not to have a “spirit of fear” but power, love, and a sound mind. Some Bible versions translate “of a sound mind” to self-control or self-discipline. In fact, I find the Complete Jewish Bible to have the clearest translation: “For God gave us a Spirit who produces not timidity, but power, love and self-discipline.”

Even when life seems out of control or unpredictable or as if everything that could go wrong is going wrong all at the same time, the Lord does not want us to be afraid. In Hebrews 13:5-6, we are told:

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

So, Friend, whatever you are going through today, do not fear. The Lord is your helper and He desires you to be filled with power, love and self-control. It may seem impossible in your own strength, but He asks us to trust in Him and His strength. (Philippians 4:13)

2 Timothy 1:7 says: For
