Hospitality: Healing, changing, and setting boundaries

Hospitality: Healing, changing, and setting boundaries

Reading Time: 6 minutes Today we are jumping right into the practice of hospitality in our everyday real lives. In my experience, the reason many are nervous or anxious about the idea of hospitality usually originates from one of the following: the memory of a negative past experience, perfectionist ideas and unrealistic expectations, and not knowing when or how to set boundaries.

Our surprise blessing... Van Sant Baby #3

Our surprise blessing… baby announcement

Reading Time: 3 minutes Our 2018 was a year of extremes filled with ecstatic highs and devastating lows. So many dramatic life changes! So many conflicting emotions! And all over such a short span of time. Two days before my mom’s memorial service, I had a positive pregnancy test. I was in shock. I have no idea why, immediately after losing Mom, the Lord chose to bless us with a surprise baby but I trust that He has a plan. This little one may have been an unexpected surprise, but I know in my heart that he is also a blessing, a precious gift.

His Encouragement: With man it is impossible, but not with God

Reading Time: 4 minutes Today we’re taking a close look at Mark 10. Don’t be like the wealthy young man. Don’t try to do it all by yourself. If you are struggling with a bad habit or a secret sin, take it to the Lord in prayer. Lay whatever your burden is down at His feet. Let go of the need to control and trust the Lord to handle it. Have faith!

5 ways to build your savings after an emergency.

5 ways to re-build your emergency fund

Reading Time: 7 minutes An emergency fund. Everyone should have one. Financial experts recommend that an emergency fund should cover at least three months of your normal expenses. In today’s economy when the majority of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck and strapped with debt, building an emergency fund takes time and self-discipline. It isn’t easy and sometimes takes sacrifice. Once you do have an emergency fund in place — no matter how big or small — there is a sense of accomplishment and rightly so!

But what happens if you need to use the emergency fund? Let’s say you have emergency expenses: major home or vehicle repair, a medical emergency, a speeding ticket, an unexpected bill, whatever it may be. Emergency funds exist for this exact reason! Once you use your fund, you will need to rebuild it. Don’t be discouraged, though. Here are 5 ways to rebuild your savings after an emergency.

His Encouragement: Commit to the Lord whatever you do

Reading Time: 3 minutes So if you are currently struggling, as I am, with sudden and unexpected changes to your carefully laid plans, perhaps we need to ask ourselves: “Did I seek the Lord’s counsel? Have I earnestly prayed about it? Am I willing to set aside my own plans and allow the Lord to lead, even when I cannot see where He is leading me?”

Hospitality: Adjusting our attitude

Reading Time: 4 minutes Today we are going to delve a little deeper into the concept of hospitality and, specifically, adjusting our attitude. Even if you are not an outgoing person, the mere idea of hosting makes you nervous, or you are fairly certain that hospitality is not one of your spiritual gifts, you can still nurture the spirit of hospitality in your heart and home.

His Encouragement: Cleansed their hearts

Reading Time: 4 minutes We are human and part of being human is making mistakes. Sometimes, these mistakes are huge… so big that they seem to overwhelm everything in our lives — including hope in forgiveness. Perhaps you have said or thought to yourself: “Lord, I want to give my heart to You and become Your child, but I am so dirty, so unclean, so messed up, so broken, so sinful, so [insert reason here]. You would never want me!”

But you know something absolutely amazing? There is no one so broken or messed up that God would not accept and forgive them.

His Encouragement: The Lord is near

Reading Time: 3 minutes I want to let you know that the pain and anguish that you feel in your heart during these times is valid. It is ok to be confused and deeply saddened. It is even ok to question the circumstances and ask God “Why?” The Lord understands our pain even better than we do and He loves and cares very deeply for each one of us. That is why today’s encouragement is from Psalm 34:18.

His Encouragement: The Lord holds their hand

Reading Time: 3 minutes Today I am sharing Psalm 37:23-24. I chose the New Century Version in particular because of the beautiful translation of the last part: “If they stumble, they will not fall, because the Lord holds their hand.” It is comforting to know that no matter what you are going through, the Lord will always be there for us… like a loving Parent holding on to their child’s hand.
