3 Ways To Keep Your Home Clean Without Breaking the Bank

3 Ways To Keep Your Home Clean Without Breaking the Bank

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Keeping a clean home while juggling kids, a tight budget, and a busy schedule can feel impossible. Between spills, messes, and everyday chaos — expensive cleaning products or time-consuming techniques just aren’t feasible.

But the good news? You don’t need pricey brands to keep your home fresh and tidy!

In this guide, I’ll share three budget cleaning products that have helped our family manage household messes without breaking the bank.

1. Microfiber gloves for dusting hard to clean areas

When we moved into our current house, one thing I loved was that all but two windows had nice, cordless blinds. (Similar to these.) And for anyone with young children, you know that blinds without long, dangerous cords are a must.

The trouble? We live in the Arizona desert — and we love keeping our windows open to enjoy the cool breeze. But with that breeze comes dirt and dust.

For two years, I struggled keeping the blinds clean. (And the dark brown color shows all the dust.) I would spend hours dusting them, only to have them covered in dust again within a few days.

I tried everything: a duster, a vacuum, and paper towels… I even gave up trying for a few months. (Yuck!)

Then I found a microfiber glove at a local store. I could slip it on, dampen it, and — finally — clean my blinds! I can clean three or four windows before rinsing the glove, letting it dry slightly, and moving on to the next batch.

Best of all? The glove only cost a few dollars!

Amazon has similar microfiber gloves available as a set of two. The two-sided gloves are washable and can be used dry or wet — and I prefer just slightly damp when dusting.

And if you’re not a fun of the glove style, these microfiber cloths are ultra absorbent, come in a variety of colors, and are also washable.

No more spending $25-30 a month on disposable paper towels! Your budget with thank you.

2. Cordless stick vacuum for daily hard floors

The majority of our current house is carpeted, except for the kitchen, dining area, and bathrooms.

Our big, old Hoover vacuum does a great job deep cleaning the carpets, but it’s too bulky for everyday use, especially in high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathrooms.

It’s also missing a few attachments. (Hey, we’re frugal and will keep using that Hoover until it dies.)

So we found a lightweight, cordless vacuum — a Eureka stick vacuum — and it has become my go-to cleaning tool after most meals. Our three kids try to be neat, but inevitably, some kind of food or crumbly mess ends up on the floor.

Though we don’t use it on the carpets often, our Eureka has been a lifesaver for quick crumb cleanups in the living room — especially before guests arrive.

We keep it docked in our coat closet so it’s always charged and ready for a quick clean.

Amazon now carries an updated Eureka stick vacuum with two attachments that ours didn’t come with. It’s a bit of an investment, but it makes daily cleaning in a busy house so much easier.

I recommend the Eureka stick vacuum to everyone — including to my local church, to help clean up in the mother’s room (nursery) and fellowship hall after potlucks.

3. Old toothbrush for scrubbing crevices

The other day I picked up a new toothbrush, which meant my old one got reassigned — to my cleaning caddy!

Why? Because toothbrushes are great tools for cleaning crevices, edging, and other hard-to-reach places.

That weird lip under the shower door? The crusty hard water at the base of faucets? A cleaning cloth, sponge, or mop don’t always work in these places. But a toothbrush does!

And you don’t have to buy a special tool. Just wait until it’s time to replace your current toothbrush and, instead of tossing the old one, add it to your cleaning supples.

Finding clever ways to reuse old items around the house can help you save a few dollars each month.
